The FDA has approved a new medication for pain

Feb 21, 2025

The last approved medication was pregabalin, over 20 years ago

The medication, suzetrigine, has been developed by Vertex, and has been approved for moderate to severe acute pain. It works by inhibiting voltage-gated sodium channel 1.8 (NaV1.8), which is involved in pain transmission. Unlike other sodium channel blockers, such as local anesthetics, the medication does not affect sensory and motor function.
